Scenic Design

THTR/DES 188: An introduction to the art and practice of scenic design for the theatre. Script analysis, research, drafting and modeling techniques. Students will develop a sense of the dramatic while creating a portfolio of scenic designs.

An early exercise in Scenic Design was observing various lighting effects on an abstract, sculptural white model, the latter of which was itself an introduction to model-making.

Final Project: Detroit ’67

Dominique Morisseau’s self-proclaimed love letter to her city sees siblings Chelle and Lank clash over the prospect of change, a conflict amplified by the introduction of Caroline into their lives. Set against a backdrop of Motown nostalgia, they and their friends Bunny and Sly navigate ambitious business plans, Caroline’s dangerous past, and the growing tensions that lead to the 1967 Detroit Race Riots.

Some of my initial concepts for D67 set design, exploring different styles of theatre (in the round, thrust, etc.)
A paper mock-up of the set.
The basement of a two-story house in Detroit, Michigan; unfinished, but made to look inviting.
