THTR/DES 088: Explore the use of modern technology to develop and communicate design ideas with speed, clarity, and visual punch. Strategies geared toward increasing the young designer’s confidence in presenting artistic concepts. Learn the basics of Photoshop and SketchUp and then apply those skills in creative execution of scenic, costume, and lighting renderings.
Project 3B: Rendering of a Historical Space

This project was the first exploration into a finalized rendering. I was first tasked with researching a setting (see caption above), then building a two-wall set of that setting in SketchUp and dressing it with furniture from the 3D Warehouse. I then exported the image of the SketchUp model into Photoshop, where I traced the outlines and added color, texture, and shadows.
Final Project: Island of Avalon

Each final project started from the same place; every student had to construct the same back wall in SketchUp. We could modify it however we liked: adding levels, changing the door shapes, taking away or combining sections, or whatever else we fancied. From there, we could render it using textures in SketchUp or using it as a guide in Photoshop.

For costume renderings, we had to represent characters with two different skin tones, with one dressed in traditionally masculine and the other in traditionally feminine clothing. Each costume rendering also had to incorporate real fabric sample among the digitally rendered clothes.

Lighting renderings had to include a spotlight, a gobo, and at least one non-traditional source we learned how to render in the course; mine were the fire brazier in Dawn and the globules of light in Midnight. Each rendering also had to have distinct color palettes and feature the characters in different positions.
